The llms.txt proposal, published at llmstxt.org in 2024, suggests a markdown file that points language models to a site's most useful pages. It is not a ranking factor and not an official standard: some AI tools may read it, others may not. It is a small, low-cost addition next to what matters most, clear and accurate product pages.
How Fexa AI builds yours
- Every product and page that is published on your online store, with its title and public URL.
- Built from the latest completed catalogue scan, in your store’s main language.
- Unpublished, draft and hidden items are excluded, and collections are left out.
- Served through Shopify’s app proxy, which signs each request; responses are cached for up to an hour.
After you publish or unpublish products, run a new scan in the app: the file follows the scan.
Questions
Do ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity read llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposal, not an adopted standard, and each AI company decides whether its crawlers use it. Fexa AI publishes the file; it cannot make any assistant read it or cite your store.
Why is it not at the root of my domain?
Shopify app proxies are served under a fixed prefix, so the file lives at your-store.com/apps/catalog-seo-ai/llms.txt rather than your-store.com/llms.txt.
Does it cost credits?
No. The file is served for every store that has the app installed, on every plan, and stops when the app is uninstalled.
Can it expose products I have not launched yet?
It lists only products and pages that are published on your online store. Unpublished and draft items are left out, and so are collections, whose publication status the app cannot read with its current permissions.
