What happens when a product has no meta description

Shopify leaves the meta description empty until you write one. Google then builds the snippet under your result from whatever text it finds on the page: a shipping banner, a size table, the first words of a description. The same goes for the search title: without one, Google shows the product name and your store name, which is often too short to say what the product is, or too long and cut mid-word.

How the drafts are written

Each draft starts from the product itself: its title, options, tags, trusted metafields and existing description. The meta description aims for 120 to 155 characters; a longer draft is shortened at the end of a sentence or clause where possible, never in the middle of a word. A duplicated store name in the title is removed.

Claims your data does not support, such as free shipping, a warranty or best-seller status, are removed from the draft and listed for you, so a meta description never promises something your store does not offer.

Change any word, untick any field, then apply: only the ticked fields are written to Shopify, and the previous version is saved in History so you can restore it in one click.
